A Professor of Law in the JD Externship Program supports the efforts of the JD Externship Program in all respects, including:

Teaching two or more sections of the JD externship course(s) each semester (Fall and Spring).
Placement Work: Coaching and educating students seeking to secure externship placements that are educationally rigorous and in compliance with ABA and VLS standards.
Regular outreach to and communication with legal practitioners across the country.
Maintaining relationships with the bar, bench, and practice community.
Designing, innovating, implementing, and revising the program's online courses and materials
Supporting the program's administrative and technological needs
Full faculty service rights and responsibilities.
Involvement with the nationwide clinical legal education community

Essential Functions and Principal Accountabilities:
Placement:

Advise and assist students in selecting and securing appropriate externship opportunities. Provide extensive education of students on legal markets, professional pathways, and career development.
Develop and maintain relationships with public and private sector employers as well as members of the judiciary.
Establish and maintain externship placement opportunities for students.
Collect and maintain data regarding externship placements.
Assist with oversight, logistics, marketing, document production, etc. in the promotion and execution of the JD Externship Program.

Teaching:

Teach two or more sections of the classroom component to help students synthesize their fieldwork experiences and further develop their lawyering skills, ethical awareness, and professionalism.
Review and provide comments on students' work, primarily reflective essays and evaluations of their experiences.
Maintain relationships with the offices where externs are placed and with the on-site supervisors at those locations.

Administrative:

Review and prepare program documents and correspondence.
Keep a record of interaction with potential placement sites.
Hold regular office hours or utilize other methods to ensure student access.
Make travel reservations/arrangements.
Assist with program technology needs (website, various software/tools, etc.).

Service:

Full faculty service obligations, including but not limited to committee work, faculty governance, presence on campus and participation in campus events.
Attend and promote the program at campus events.
Seek out opportunities to promote the program locally and nationally, generally through presentations on relevant topics at various regional or national conferences or participating in clinical legal education organizations.
Required Education, Skills and Experience:

Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school.
Preferred five years post-JD legal work.
Experience and interest in mentoring and supervising students.
High degree of professionalism in all aspects of lawyering.
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Creativity and flexibility in approaching and solving problems.
Strong interest in all aspects of legal practice, legal education, and the legal profession.
Flexibility in scheduling, traveling, and being available for various events to support the Program.
Familiarity with and comfort navigating various software/platforms, including practice management and timekeeping software, Canvas or related learning management system(s), and cloud-based Microsoft Office programs.

Must be able to work legally within the United States without sponsorship.
Physical ability to perform all essential functions of the job with or without basic accommodations.
