Job Description

The successful candidate will fulfill one of the three welding engineering services within Electric Boat.

Columbia and Virginia Payload Module Design:

  • Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following: Participate in design-build teams to develop designs that are sound from a materials and weldability perspective and are cost-effective in terms of producibility.
  • Support engineering and design in the development of new concepts and the development of associated drawings/disclosures.
  • Review of structural and piping drawings/disclosures for overall producibility (accessibility, use of appropriate material, use of correct welding notes and graphics, and application of appropriate non-destructive testing) and compliance with fabrication specifications.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise on welding related issues to design, construction, and overhaul activities taking place at various Electric Boat locations.
  • Review, administer, and interpret fabrication, welding, non-destructive testing, and consumable specifications, both military and commercial as required.
  • Develop and maintain company standards, procedures, and best practices in the areas of welding.
  • Interface with Electric Boat Engineering, Operations, Information Technology departments as well as SUPSHIP Groton, NRRO, NR, and NAVSEA as required. Vendor Support:
  • Review and disposition Vendor Procedure Approval Requests for welding.
  • Disposition Vendor Information Requests related to welding. Provide technical guidance and expertise on welding related issues and repairs.
  • Oversee and provide guidance with regards to vendor welder performance qualifications.
  • Conduct welding audits at vendor facilities in conjunction with Supplier Quality to ensure compliance with fabrication specifications.
  • Provide vendor welding VPAR training and guidance to new vendors through Supplier Conferences, summit meetings or at their facility.
  • Interface with Electric Boat Engineering, Purchasing, Supplier Quality, SUPSHIP Groton, and NAVSEA as required. Construction Support:
  • Disposition Engineering Reports, Vendor Information Requests, Deficiency Forms/Reports, Task Group Instructions and Trade Unsats related to welding.
  • Investigate and evaluate new mechanized, automated, robotic welding equipment and provide production support as needed.
  • Serve as project lead or technical lead on both in-house and externally funded development and process improvement/cost reduction tasks including welding equipment.
  • Shipyard support for both day-to-day and global welding issue adjudication.
  • Interface with Electric Boat Engineering, Operations, Information Technology, Training departments as well as SUPSHIP Groton, NRRO, NR, and NAVSEA as required. Education/ Experience

    Required:
    • Bachelor of Science or Master's Degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy/Metallurgical Engineering or Material Engineering (focus on metals as opposed to non-metallics) or equivalent Preferred:
      • Experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding or other heavy fabrication, though not required, would be beneficial. Familiarity or experience with basic arc welding processes is highly desired. Engineering experience in the design or support of structural or piping applications and the ability to read and understand drawings is desired (ASME Y14 Standards). Familiarity with Military, ASME IX, and AWS welding specifications is a plus.

        Applicant must have the ability to understand basic principles of welding metallurgy and use this to explain/understand weld metal mechanical properties performance, issues with cracking, and other material related problems and issues. Applicant must be able to read, write, and interpret specifications, procedures, reports, and other documents; be a team player, comfortable working and communicating with all levels; and be able to write and speak clearly and possess basic computer skills, preferably including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point. Applicant should have the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to investigate problems by effectively asking questions, extracting necessary data from available sources, and working with others to determine root causes and implement appropriate solutions.
