The Clinical Educator is responsible for providing overall organization and coordination of education and Quality Improvement activities within the department. Designs and conducts educational programs for Surgical Services. Develops and coordinates unit based orientation programs. Position requires close contact with the Surgical Services staff to meet ongoing educational needs to ensure staff competency. Maintains educational documentation on all training and in-services; promotes quality of care and patient safety programs. Collaborates with Director to maintain staff competencies and meet current#applicable practice standards. Graduate of an accredited RN school of nursing program. Minimum 5 years relevant clinical experience. Prior experience teaching preferred. BSN or bachelors degree with strong clinical experience required, MSN or masters degree in education preferred. Current NH RN license. CNOR required.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

In partnership with the Director of Critical Care Services (ICU/Telemetry) and the Medical Director of Critical Care, the Clinical Educator role models and advances the professional specialty practice of Critical Care Nursing. The Clinical Educator is responsible for providing overall organization and coordination of education and Quality Improvement activities within the department. Designs and conducts educational programs for Intensive Care and Telemetry. Develops and coordinates unit based orientation programs. Position requires close contact with the Critical Care / Telemetry staff to meet ongoing educational needs to ensure staff competency. Maintains educational documentation on all training and in-services; promotes quality of care and patient safety programs. Collaborates with Director to maintain staff competencies and meet current AACN and other applicable practice standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promotes and maintains the philosophy, values, standards of performance and goals of the organization and department.
  • Supports standards of practice and evidence based care for all patients served by Critical Care.
  • Collaborates with physicians, providers, and members of the health care team to identify and meet patient and family care needs.
  • Provides direction and support for staff in clinical decision making, priority setting and management of patient care.
  • Develops staff education plans and coordinates appropriate education to meet plan, including but not limited to skills stations and simulations.
  • Establishes departmental educational programs including annual competency evaluation.
  • Coordinates and serves as the primary instructor for the Indiana University Adult Critical Care education program.
  • In collaboration with the Director, assists in interviewing, mentoring, and performance reviews. In collaboration with unit leadership, responsible for implementation and maintenance of peer review process.
  • Maintains appropriate clinical competence in areas of care and responsibility and has the ability to cover staff as needed/requested.
  • Maintains and reports quality improvement activities within Critical Care.
  • In collaboration with unit project/committee team members and unit leadership, provides oversight of policy and procedure development, review and implementation.
  • Participates in research activities and provides leadership for implementation of new practices.
  • Special projects coordinator as assigned by the Director.
  • Observes all health and safety requirements.
  • Incumbent is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned.
  • As delegated, represents Director in his/her absence for department specific issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

New Hampshire RN License required. Bachelors degree in nursing or related field required with a minimum of 5 years of recent hospital experience in critical care. Ability to assess competency and practice issues; create an effective educational plan to meet the AACN Standard of Care. Must possess critical thinking skills with the ability to prioritize needs rapidly. Must possess and demonstrate excellent verbal/written communication, negotiations and problem-solving skills. Recent experience in developing, teaching, and coordinating educational programs for adult learners preferred. Work history with quality measures, safety outcomes, program development, and process improvement highly preferred. Ability to work flexible hours based upon staff requirements related to education and competence.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

Education: Graduate of an accredited RN school of nursing program.

Experience: Minimum 5 years relevant clinical experience. Prior experience teaching preferred.

Credentials: BSN or bachelors degree with strong clinical experience required. Current NH RN license.

CCRN or completion of within six months of hire
