The Center for Open Neuroscience ( in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Dartmouth, led by Research Associate Professor Yaroslav Halchenko, is developing many popular open neuroinformatics solutions, including PyMVPA, NeuroDebian, and DataLad. We are looking for a full-time software developer to work on the following NIH and NSF supported projects. DANDI ( is a collaborative (MIT/Dartmouth/Kitware) project to establish a contemporary platform for publishing, sharing, and processing neurophysiology data funded by the NIH BRAIN Initiative. DataLad ( is a versatile decentralized system for managing scientific digital objects, from code to large datasets. The ReproNim project develops solutions to improve reproducibility in neuroimaging and beyond.


All our projects are developed completely in the open, so this is an excellent opportunity to make a valuable and visible contribution to the ecosystem of scientific software, and to get hands-on experience in the full cycle of open-source development and deployment. We are collaborating with many other excellent projects and initiatives in the scope of these efforts (including MIT, McGill, Kitware, Juelich Research Center Germany, etc), so it is also an excellent opportunity to establish working collaborations with leading projects in open neuroscience.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Solid knowledge of the Python language and its ecosystem (pypi/pip, conda, etc.).
  • Solid knowledge of Git: underlying principles, porcelain and plumbing interfaces, etc.
  • Demonstrated history of being a contributing member on a programming team.
  • Curiosity about technology and science and a desire to learn.
  • Effective and timely communication of project progress and impediments.
  • Problem analysis and debugging skills.
  • Documented success in delivery of software solutions.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP), Application Design Patterns and computer science foundations.
  • Working experience and ability to demonstrate good knowledge and practices in working with git, GitHub and related development services (e.g., Travis-CI or CircleCI).
  • Good verbal and written skills to accompany developed code with relevant documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge with data versioning using git-annex is a plus
  • Working knowledge of HTML, Javascript, JQuery, XML, and CSS is a plus
  • Working knowledge of virtualization/containerization solutions (vagrant/docker) and cloud platforms (Amazon Web Services) is a plus

Key Accountabilities


Code development and maintenance:

  • design, implement, document, and thoroughly test code necessary for a project's functionality,
  • open source development using contemporary infrastructure for collaboration (such as and platforms for distributing and deploying software (such as Debian, and conda),
  • utilization of containerized (Singularity, Docker, etc.) and cloud (AWS) solutions,
  • provide ongoing maintenance support for existing and to be developed systems,
  • contribute to designsand implementation of integrations between software systems.
